52 Super Series: Racing abandoned today at Cascais

Racing today at the Egnos 52 Super Series Cascais Cup was called off due to very unstable conditions.

Shifty and unstable weather conditions forced the Racing Committee at the Cascais Cup to put off the start of racing for an hour and a half. Shorty after the start of the first race a rainsquall and strong gusts followed by dead calm forced the racing Committee to abandon the prospect of racing today.  Azzurra and the rest of the fleet of TP52s had little choice but to head back to port and get ready for tomorrow’s scheduled races.

“We defended our lead” joked tactician Vasco Vascotto. “Seriously, the Racing Committee made the correct choice in calling off racing after the wind shifted a full 120 degrees to the right.”

At the time that racing was abandoned the wind was gusting at about 18 to 20 knots, but it was the strong shift in direction that was the real cause of today’s abandonment.

Racing tomorrow will start at 12:30 PM local time, 13:30 PM CEST. Weather conditions permitting, there will be three windward/leeward races to make up at least partially for the annulment today. As always, fans can follow Azzurra’s progress live from the regatta course on Facebook and Twitter and live-image streaming and races with commentary in English can be followed on Virtual Eye thanks to the 52 Super Series’ organization.
