Racing resumes after a stop due to the 72 hours of lockdown that put all of Auckland on hold due to a Covid alert.
The two teams returned to face each other on the water today on course E, in two further regattas, raced in a 9-12 knot breeze.
Luna Rossa wins the first race with a comfortable lead. The first regatta begins with an exciting start, where both boats balance on the foils in high and slow mode. They both cross the starting line one second early, for which each team is inflicted with a penalty that obliges them to slow down by 50 meters. Luna Rossa immediately manages to put herself in front of the British boat and gains meters, staying on the right side of the course. At each gate there is a steady increase in seconds, until the finish line where Luna Rossa closes the race with a 1:-second advantage in front of the English team.
In the second race, despite an equal start for both teams, halfway down the first leg the British are able to position themselves in front and start stretching ahead. Their lead shrinks from over 30 seconds at the second leeward mark to 9 seconds at the final downwind mark. However the recovery is not enough to bring home another victory and the day ends with an overall score of 5-1, with Luna Rossa still 4 points ahead of the English on the scoreboard.
Vasco Vascotto, afterguard
“On the eve of the Prada Cup a five to one score would have been considered a great result. Clearly, it’s a bit disappointing when you lose the last race of the day, although we see it as an opportunity to understand and review the mistakes we made and get back on the water tomorrow to do even better. We are confident that we have everything it takes to do well, and we need two more wins. We will try to take these two points home as soon as possible."
