Designer and sailor Dan Lenard has set a new Guinness World Record, covering 285 miles solo aboard a small boat, without external assistance and without ever dropping anchor. The boat used for the challenge was an ILCA 7 built by PSA, measuring 4.21 meters in length with a maximum beam of 1.37 meters: a vessel designed for Olympic sailing, extremely technical and sensitive to trim adjustments, but certainly not intended for long offshore passages. The record, certified during his third attempt, was achieved in the waters of the Adriatic.

At the age of 57, Lenard accomplished this feat with the support of the Vela Code Team and in line with the Vela Code Movement, which for years has promoted a sustainable and conscious approach to sailing. The achievement was carried out in full compliance with the environmental principles that define the project: zero emissions, no use of single-use plastics, and no plastic bottles on board. All necessary provisions were prepared and stowed in advance, allowing the sailor to live and sleep aboard during the crossing.

Lenard set out on August 12, and after days of continuous sailing he broke the record, further strengthening his reputation as an innovative sailor and ambassador of marine sustainability.

The Value of the Vela Code Project

The Vela Code Movement, of which Lenard is one of the leading figures, was created to raise awareness within the nautical community about the state of the seas, through direct experiences that serve as concrete testimony. Its mission is to turn every sailor into an active observer and an ambassador for the protection of the oceans, spreading a message of responsibility and respect for the marine environment.

Dan Lenard’s achievement therefore fits into a broader framework that combines sporting challenge, innovation, and environmental commitment, showing how sailing can be not only a passion, but also a tool to promote change and awareness.
