Lyman-Morse unveils the Hood 42 LM, a masterpiece of American Boatbuilding

For nearly five decades, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding has earned an international reputation for crafting some of America's most extraordinary yachts at its facility in Thomaston, Maine. This legacy continues with the unveiling of hull No. 1 of the Hood 42 LM. More than the launch of a new yacht, the Hood 42 LM represents the intersection of timeless design, artisan craftsmanship and modern engineering. It is a yacht where every sculpted detail, every perfectly blended piece of joinery, and every hand-finished surface reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Designed by Chris Hood and the team of C.W. Hood Yachts, the Hood 42 LM carries the unmistakable profile that has become synonymous with New England boating. Inspired by the classic designs that have graced the region for generations, her graceful sheer, varnished mahogany house sides, bronze bow rail, and elegant proportions evoke a timeless era of
yachting. Yet beneath her traditional appearance lies thoroughly modern engineering.

From the sculpted profile to the perfectly proportioned cabin house finished in flawless varnish, the Hood 42 LM rewards a longer gaze. The brightwork flows seamlessly into meticulously executed joinery, while custom bronze hardware and hand-finished details reveal themselves one thoughtful element at a time. Every surface reflects the patience of artisans who understand that true luxury is quietly experienced.

Constructed using Lyman-Morse's cold-molded composite process, the yacht combines Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar with advanced composite laminates to create a structure that is exceptionally strong, light, and remarkably quiet underway. Twin Volvo Penta 440-horsepower with DPS drives deliver responsive handling, joystick maneuverability, excellent fuel efficiency, and a cruising speed in the mid-30-knot range. The juxtaposition of tradition and technology is intentional. Hidden beneath her timeless profile is contemporary engineering that delivers the confidence, ride, and refinement that today's owners expect, while preserving every ounce of her classic character.

The Hood 42 LM is the latest offering in the Hood Series by Lyman-Morse, which has seen the boatbuilder also produce versions of 35’ LOA (two yachts launched to date) and a 57’ flybridge motor yacht, with a new 46’ version currently under construction. Hull No. 1 of the Hood 42 LM demonstrates just how personalized each series-built yacht can become.
Examples include a hideaway electronics console at the lower helm or custom-forged bronze fittings designed exclusively to secure fenders while blending seamlessly in with the 42’s profile. Similarly, a carbon-fiber companionway door is wrapped in perfectly varnished veneers with a counter-balanced drop window and screen. Even the salon side and aft windows electrically lower and raise, while integrated screens deploy effortlessly. The spruce and teak ladder from the cockpit to the flybridge is shaped for both easy access and to complement the exterior profile. Individually, each detail is impressive. Collectively, they reveal the obsessive pursuit of refinement that defined the entire build process.

"They're details that don't exist because they're easy," said Lyman. "They exist because someone cared enough to ask whether we could build them better." Step below and the handcraftsmanship and artistry is immediately evident. Rich varnished veneers, perfectly blended mahogany joinery, sculpted cabinetry, and carefully balanced natural light create an interior that feels less like a yacht and more like a bespoke gentleman's club. Every locker, corner, and transition has been considered, producing an environment that is warm, sophisticated, and yet unmistakably functional.

Hull No. 1 features a spacious single-owner stateroom forward with generous stowage, enclosed head and a separate shower stall. The main deck is arranged as an open, single-level living space that seamlessly integrates the helm to port, galley, salon, and entertaining areas while the expansive windows flood the interior with natural light. Although Hull No. 1 reflects one owner's unique vision, the Hood 42 LM also represents the evolution of the Hood series by Lyman Morse, allowing future owners to personalize layouts, accommodations and details while benefiting from the efficiencies of a thoroughly developed series platform. There are multiple interior arrangements available as well as both flybridge and sedan configurations.

The Hood 42 LM also continues a successful collaboration between Lyman-Morse and C.W. Hood Yacht Design. Previous projects include the acclaimed Hood 35 LM and the award-winning Hood 57 LM, each recognized for combining classic proportions with contemporary naval architecture, a superior ride and exceptional craftsmanship. "Chris has an incredible ability to design boats that feel timeless the day they're launched," said Lyman. "Our role is bringing those designs to life with the same level of care, precision, and craftsmanship that has defined Lyman-Morse for nearly 50 years.”

The Hood 42 LM will be on display September 17-20 at the Newport International Boat Show. Visitors will quickly realize that this is not simply a new yacht from Lyman-Morse. She is the latest expression of a boatbuilding culture where artisan craftsmanship, innovation, and an unwavering pride in the work continue to define one of America's most respected boatbuilders.
