The tenth edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in partnership with Boat International Media with title sponsor Loro Piana, ended Saturday, June 3rd. Taking full advantage of the spectacular waters of Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, a fleet of 17 yachts competed in four coastal races over four days.

Two Southern Wind yachts were racing in the Superyacht Class, the 102 Seawave and her sistership Farfalla. The latter yacht had just arrived back to the Med after a very successful charter season in the Pacific and in just a couple of weeks her crew had her changed over from cruising to racing mode.

After their victory at the New Zealand Millennium Cup, Farfalla’s owner and his crew were eager to start the competition. But Seawave was equally motivated and determined to defend the podium finish she got in 2016 at this event.

Over the first two days the two Southern Winds were sailing their own private match race towards the back of the fleet. It was a continuous series of tacks, tactics and speed that kept the owners and their crews happy and challenged and spectators at the edges of their seats.

The yachts showed their stuff in medium to light breezes: Farfalla finished second and third in the final two days and Seawave finished second on the third day; the overall rankings were up for grabs right to the end.

At the end of the event Farfalla was in fourth place overall, just one point behind the newly launched custom 130’ My Song owned by Pier Luigi Loro Piana. She was followed by Seawave at just two points difference.

The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta is just the beginning of these two yacht’s Mediterranean season. Farfalla will be alternating charters with events such as the Superyacht Cup in Palma and Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. In September Seawave will be competing in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.
