After almost twenty years the launch of the first Pocket Explorer, Hydro Tec returns to make its mark. That first model – the Naumachos 82 – broke away from convention, revolutionizing the market and setting a trend that still endures today. What was once perceived as something outside traditional yachting has evolved into a widely adopted and celebrated concept. With Vagrant, unveiled at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show 2025 within the Design & Innovation Hub, Hydro Tec reinvents its original creation, celebrating thirty years of history and reaffirming its role as a pioneer in the evolution of explorer yachts.
The name Vagrant recalls the heritage of the British Navy and evokes the spirit of a free wanderer at sea — perfectly in tune with the philosophy of the explorer yacht: a vessel conceived to roam without boundaries, exploring every corner of the oceans with style, comfort, and safety.
At the heart of Vagrant lie three core principles, fused into a single design language: celebrating design icons while looking to the future through the past, listening to and respecting clients’ needs, and giving continuity to Hydro Tec’s design philosophy. This creative journey embraces heritage elements — such as the gentleman-style helm station, the perfectly symmetrical aesthetic, and the inspiration of a steam funnel — generating an immediate sense of familiarity. Alongside them, retro-futuristic details inspired by the 1970s, such as exposed engine air intakes, establish a new standard of authenticity and sophistication, redefining the very notion of exploratory elegance.
An eloquent example of Hydro Tec’s holistic approach is the “funnel”, born initially as a technical constraint and now the iconic feature of the entire project. More than a profile-defining element, the funnel is a structural backbone that allowed the lateral supports to be lightened, creating a fully glazed main salon with wide sliding doors that open seamlessly to the surrounding seascape. This becomes a celebration of the explorer yacht’s spirit — an invitation to experience the freedom of roaming across horizons with uninterrupted views.
As Sergio Cutolo, Founder and President of Hydro Tec, affirms:
“With Vagrant we celebrate not only our thirty-year history, but also the enduring legacy of the pocket explorer. From the Naumachos 82 to today, we have carried forward a vision that unites authenticity, innovation, and freedom at sea.”
On the technical side, Nicola Camuffo, Chief Technical Officer of Hydro Tec, adds:
“The structural chimney was a turning point: by lightening the lateral elements, we created a fully glazed main salon with sliding doors, opening the yacht to uninterrupted views. It is the perfect synthesis of technical ingenuity and design vision.”
Freedom is indeed central to the project: the modern explorer experience demands flexible, reconfigurable spaces. For this reason, Vagrant adopts an open-plan layout, made possible by relocating technical systems outward and employing an open-corner design that removes barriers between interior and exterior, offering panoramic views and a constant dialogue with the environment. On the upper deck, this philosophy continues with a social and wellness club that can be adapted into a gym, lounge, dining room, or convivial space — depending on the owner’s lifestyle. A modular environment, conceived to always be dynamic and evolving.
With Vagrant, Hydro Tec reaffirms its belief that design and engineering must merge into a single vision. When past, present, and future meet, the result is a yacht destined for all generations, capable of speaking to each in a personal and authentic way. A true refuge at sea, ready to take its inhabitants wherever they desire.
