The opening day of the SSL Gold Cup Asian Qualifier in Pattaya was marked by intense competition and challenging conditions. The weather featured northwesterly winds, sunshine, and temperatures exceeding 31 degrees Celsius, creating a demanding environment for the sailors.

In Group A, the races commenced with Vietnam and Myanmar showing strong starts, while the Philippines demonstrated superior upwind speed, leading at the first windward mark. Despite widespread spinnaker issues, the Philippines maintained composure to secure a win, followed by South Korea, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Captain Ridgely Balladares of SSL Team Philippines highlighted their upwind advantage as a key factor in their success.

Race 2 saw Vietnam and Myanmar excel at the start, with Myanmar initially controlling the fleet. Nhung Tran, trimmer for SSL Team Vietnam, emphasized the importance of teamwork and clear communication in their performance. The race featured tight battles between Myanmar and the Philippines, with Myanmar ultimately securing the win. South Korea faced disqualification due to a crew overboard incident.

Group B experienced dramatic racing with increasing winds and challenging sea conditions. Oman took an early lead in Race 1, maintaining it through effective sail handling and teamwork. Captain Nasser al Mashari of SSL Team Oman credited their preparation and communication for their success. UAE and Kazakhstan faced difficulties with spinnaker handling, impacting their performance.

In Race 2, UAE launched aggressively but encountered early setbacks. Ahmed Al Tagher of SSL Team UAE noted the importance of clear communication and learning from the day's challenges. Oman continued to perform consistently, securing another win, while UAE and Kazakhstan followed.

The leaderboard after Day 1 showed the Philippines leading Group A with 7 points, followed by Myanmar, South Korea, and Vietnam. In Group B, Oman led with 6 points, with Kazakhstan and UAE tied.

As the competition progresses, teams aim to refine their strategies and improve their performances. The SSL Gold Cup Asian Qualifier continues to challenge the fleets, with more races scheduled from December 20 to 22, 2025.
