The Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team began its participation in the 44Cup Marina Jandía yesterday with a particularly meaningful day on and off the water. While the institutional opening ceremony of Marina Jandía was taking place with the presence of the entities supporting the project, the Spanish crew completed its official training session, facing for the first time the complex conditions of the new racecourse in southern Fuerteventura.
On the water, the day proved invaluable for calibrating pace, refining manoeuvres, and adjusting key configurations ahead of the start of competition.
A solid training day and a team arriving in its best form
The session allowed the crew to work on tight mark roundings, crowded buoy approaches, and different trim configurations - highlighting strong coordination and precision during high-demand manoeuvres.
Team tactician Alfredo González emphasised the crew’s excellent form: “This is the most prepared we’ve ever been. Yesterday we showed clarity in our decisions, very clean manoeuvres and good speed across all ranges. We are extremely motivated to deliver a strong performance here in the Canary Islands, which we consider our home.”
Skipper and owner Daniel Calero praised the quality of the venue: “The Jandía area is spectacular - technical, variable, and tactically rich. An ideal place to end the season.”
A racecourse as spectacular as it is demanding
Southern Fuerteventura has shown why it is poised to become an international sailing reference. Jandía combines elements that significantly increase tactical difficulty: gusts funnelling through the mountains, wide wind shifts requiring meticulous reading, the short Atlantic chop that demands constant adjustments, and immediate access to open sea just seconds from the marina.
The result is a dynamic, technical and highly competitive race area - perfect for teams looking to capitalise on precise manoeuvres and rapid decision-making under pressure.
