With a deck layout inspired by the fourth SW105 currently under construction, the new SW120GT stands out for its sleek carbon fibre coachroof conceived to accomodate a skylight bringing light into the saloon.

The SW120 is Southern Wind Shipyard’s current flagship, a superb development on the SW96 and SW105 coming from the successful collaboration between Southern Wind, Nauta Yacht Design and Farr Yacht Design.

This project expresses Southern Wind’s mission to build dependable sailing yachts that combine comfort and performance with safety and reliability.

The SW120 is a versatile semi-custom platform designed to offer owners the flexibility to tailor specifications and give yachts their own unique personalities. This practical and efficient alternative to a full-custom construction is advantageous to the owner, offering all the benefits of a series build, including a higher level of reliability, combined into a more cost effective project.

Naval Architect Farr Yacht Design has created the SW120 following a multipurpose design brief for a superyacht that can be optimized to suit her owner’s specific needs. Performance is embodied in every SWS yacht and the SW120 will deliver the thrill of exhilarating sailing with a fantastic helming experience and the ability to sail with a limited crew.

Jim Schmicker, vice president of Farr Yacht Design explains: "The Southern Wind 120 is propelled to impressive light wind performance by the combination of a lifting keel, with a draft range of 3.8 to 6m, and a very manageable amount of sail area. The lightship displacement of only 94.5 tons is a result of Southern Wind Shipyard’s unrelenting commitment to light-weight construction. There are a wide range of possibilities for the choice of keel type, including fixed and telescopic, and complementary rig size."

The SW120 will be constructed in Carbon composite sandwich utilizing the infusion technique, a tried and tested system that allows for a lightweight yet stiff and durable construction.  Nomex and pre-preg may also be implemented in certain areas depending on the weight targets.

Nauta Yacht Design have drawn on their expertise and designed the deck and interior of the SW120 to combine functionality with sublime beauty and elegance.

A selection of arrangements has been developed to start a conversation with potential owners and the large interior and exterior volumes will allow for a variety of configurations: “In each of these configurations, the central cockpit is the living heart of the yacht, fitted with convertible tables for comfortable al fresco dining, well separated from the maneuvering area by large sunbeds making for a welcoming open-air lounging area.” explains Massimo Gino from Nauta Design.

Typically, Southern Wind owners have chosen the classic four cabin interior arrangement with master cabin forward and crew aft but the interior of the SW120 will also allow for a full beam master cabin aft with direct access to the stern cockpit.

Defining the next step in the legacy of Southern Wind Shipyard, the SW120 project, whether it be in its RS, DS or GT configuration, combines all the knowledge and experience gained from dozens of prior superyacht builds with the latest design trends and innovations to achieve the ultimate performance sailing yacht with oceangoing capability.
