Southern Wind announces the delivery of the first SW105 Satisfaction

Satisfaction: there couldn’t be a better name for the first 105-footer built by Southern Wind Shipyard, now ready to sail her maiden voyage from Cape Town to the Mediterranean Sea.

The first unit in the new SW105 high performance cruiser miniseries, Satisfaction was commissioned by a performance-oriented owner who was looking for the latest in yachting technology and whose ideas turned into significant innovations. “The aim when conceiving this project was to incorporate a modicum of race boat features into a cruiser/racer while keeping a beautiful aesthetic and a high level of comfort. This yacht stands out for the radical design of her lines and the advanced technology of her materials and systems” said Jim Schmicker, Vice President of Farr Yacht Design, who designed the SW105 naval architecture and collaborated with Southern Wind and Nauta on the General Concept.

“Satisfaction” features wide aft sections, an open transom and twin rudder configuration. Exceptionally for a yacht this size, the garage holds a 4.2m+ carbon jet tender and a 3m+ jet ski. “The wide aft sections and transom of the SW105 make for more internal volume and deck area; both a plus for a high performance cruising yacht. This generous width is carefully balanced with extra volume in the forward sections to ensure the yacht remains in control with a level for-and-aft trim when sailing at typical upwind heel angles”, concludes Schmicker.

The owner chose to mount an advanced telescopic keel because he wanted top upwind performance without compromising the interior layout and saloon space. The fixed bowsprit has an integrated anchor arm and fittings for a gennaker tack line and a furling Code Zero. These enhance Satisfaction’s performance and grant flexibility for practical anchoring and sailing manoeuvres.

Jib sheets run below Satisfaction’s clean deck and bull’s eye fairleads lead to cleats concealed in flush-to-the-deck lockers. The deck is in synthetic teak deck for weight optimization (35% less than teak), easy maintenance and reduced thermal transfer in hot climates.SW105#01 has modern design that is immediately evident from the single level deck: a continuous line from stern to coachroof that makes the yacht look longer and sleeker. “We succeeded in designing a single level deck while keeping the freeboard low; this without compromising the height of the interiors for the comfort of guests and crew and still leaving room for structures and running systems as we had planned from the start,” says Massimo Gino from Nauta Design, responsible for the yacht’s Deck and Interior design.

Satisfaction complements her sporty soul with a high level of cruising comfort. Her fully equipped guest cockpit has a coffee table with a cool box inside and two deck fridges. A custom electric dumbwaiter connects to the galley for easy serving and clearing.
 
The uncluttered sightlines of this Raised Saloon yacht blend a sleek coachroof with high ceilings. Light floods into the interior through panoramic windows, hull portlights and a doublewide electrically operated companionway.

“The interior have been customized accorrding to the owner's request of having a yacht with house-like ergonomics,” says Massimo Gino. The main saloon is a bright open space where eight to ten people can relax on couches or at the dining table. Immediately fore of the living area, a spacious convertible studio/TV area flawlessly separates the main saloon from the owner’s private area. An integrated entertainment and domotic system with an AMX controller ensure enjoyment on board.
 
The SW105#01 interior features Southern Wind Shipyard’s most popular owner’s cabin forward layout with three comfortable en suite guest cabins amidships and crew quarters and galley aft, a layout that allows maximum privacy for crew and guests. The crew area aft is an efficient living and working environment for five to six and has three crew cabins, two heads, a fully equipped galley, a crew mess and a nav station.

Marco Aberti, Southern Wind’s General Manager, shares his impressions after the sea trial: “Satisfaction is a perfectly balanced and powerful sailing yacht that performs very well in light air. Thanks to her twin rudder configuration, she is very light on the helm in any condition. The wide deck with the cockpits on the same level gives a real superyacht feeling.”

The yacht is built in compliance to RINA Charter Class and will be registered as Commercial Yacht.With two more units of this miniseries scheduled for delivery in June and December 2018, the SW105 series is confirming Southern Wind’s leadership in the production of semi-custom yachts in the 30m+ range (20 yachts in this size range delivered since 2006)
