Oxford, (MD) 20 October, 2018 - Bacardi Cup 2018 champions Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA) finished fourth at the Star World Championship, held last week in Oxford, MD.

Having won the 91st edition of the prestigious Bacardi Cup last March, the team was there competing as ambassador for Bacardi USA; In fact, this new promotion between Bacardi and the Star Class will see each year’s Bacardi Cup winners represent the Bacardi Company in competition at the following Star Class World Championship.

Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi are a strong team and very active in the Star class. Diego has been the first skipper in the International ranking for quite some time now, and had previously come very close to winning the Star World title with Sergio.

With a scoring sheet of 32 points (6, 6, 10, 19, 1, 9) and a fleet of incredible value, they ended in an honorable position, fourth overall, behind Paul Cayad (USA) with Arthur Lopes (BRA) in third, 2017 World Champions Eivind Melleby (NOR) with Joshua Revkin (USA) second, and the winners, the Brazilians Jorge Zarif with Guilherme de Almeida.
“The glass is definitely half full for me - said Diego Negri, now back home in Italy - The bronchitis that caught me at the beginning of the week, the really tough conditions before the event and no training on this new boat… I really couldn’t ask for more. A sincere thank you goes to Bacardi, that helped us coming to Oxford. Another big award, after winning the 91st Bacardi Cup in March 2018.”

“Bacardi and the Star Class have a very strong bond that goes back many years - said Eduardo Cutillas from Bacardi USA - we’ve partnered and supported the class on many events. Helping the winners of the Bacardi Cup compete at the Star World Championship represents the evolution of this partnership between Bacardi and the class, and it’s absolutely in line with our vision of the World’s best sailors racing together.”

It will be great to welcome them back again, among all of the other 62 who just finished the Star Worlds in Maryland, at the 92nd edition of the Bacardi Cup Regatta that will take place from March 3-9, 2019, between Coral Reef yacht club, Biscayne Bay yacht club, Shake a Leg Miami and the United States Sailing Center.
