Le Français, France’s celebrated heritage tall ship, has been refitted with International products in preparation for her 2026 working season, including a high-profile appearance at Le Grand Pavois La Rochelle in September.  

Under an exclusive agreement with Marine Évènements, AkzoNobel was selected to deliver above-and below-the-waterline coating solutions for the 78-year-old, three-masted barque, chosen for its proven reputation, global expertise and hands-on technical support to ensure a result worthy of such an iconic vessel. 

The project, which was carried out in St. Malo, Concarneau, La Rochelle and Brest, incorporated the selection and use of the complete International coating system, from primer through to topcoat, as well as support and hands-on guidance from AkzoNobel's techincal team to streamline the extensive surface preparation and separate coating stages. 

Demonstrating the breadth of the International product range on a demanding multi-surface heritage project, the solutions deployed included antifouling for the hull, high-gloss varnish for interior and exterior woodwork and a premium topcoat for interior and deck areas. 

Built in Denmark in 1948 as Kaskelot for the Royal Greenland Trading Company, Le Français has weathered nearly eight decades of demanding Atlantic service. At 47 metres in length and carrying 19 sails, she is a rare example of a working tall ship still actively crewed and maintained in service. 

Le Français today serves as a platform for education, heritage, and environmental advocacy. Under the stewardship of Marine Évènements and based in St. Malo, she introduces approximately 2,600 young people to the sea each year through Grand Voilier École’s educational sailing programmes. She also supports the work of Témoins Polaires, raising awareness of climate change and the fragility of polar ecosystems. 

Le Français was successfully relaunched on schedule in Concarneau ready for a busy season of charter commitments and educational sailing programmes, showcasing a high-quality, consistent finish worthy of the vessel’s historic significance and prestige, while also equipping her with the protection needed for the seasons ahead.
